Vernon High School in Mount Vernon, Rockcastle County, Kentucky from 1907 to 1917. 481 Emma started to school when she was 7 years old and finished the 3rd grade that year. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1917 when she was 16 years old. She always made A's, was always the youngest in her class and was never absent in high school.

• Occupation: Emma worked at the Post Office in Mount Vernon, Rockcastle County, Kentucky. 481 She worked there after graduating from high school until she was old enough to take the teachers examination.

• Occupation: Emma worked as a School Teacher in Maywood, Lincoln County, Kentucky from July 1918 to February 1919. 481 She taught in a country school at Maywood [near Stanford] from Jul 1918 - Feb 1919. She taught all 8 grades and had to clean and build a fire. She was paid $48 per month and paid $12 per month for room and board with a family. That school year the flu epidemic closed the schools. Emma went back home to Mount Vernon and never taught full time again.

• Occupation: Emma went back to work at the Post Office in Mount Vernon in 1919 after the flu epidemic closed the schools in Lincoln County. She told that people would come in to get their mail then go home and die from the flu. At one point, she was the only person who worked at the Post Office that hadn't taken the flu so she ran it alone (at 18 years old). 481

• Organizations: Emma joined the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) in 1927 and remained an active member for many years. She held several local offices including President in 1944 &1945. She served on the Kentucky State PTA Board from 1954-1960 and was elected State Secretary for 1957-1960.

She was a member of the Advisory Committee on Education in 1955 and the Governor's Conference on Education in 1956. She was also in the Homemaker's, Ladies Aid and Women's Civic Clubs. She taught the Adult Sunday School Class at the Loyall Church of Christ for over 20 years. 481

• Obituary: Published in the Harlan Daily Enterprise on 20 January 1978 in Harlan, Harlan County, Kentucky. 483 MRS. ELMER HOPKINS:
Mrs. Elmer Hopkins, 77, Loyall, died Thursday in Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

A native of Mt. Vernon, Mrs. Hopkins had been living here for 56 years. She was a member of the Loyall Church of Christ and taught Sunday School there for 25 years.

She was a former postmaster at Loyall and one of the oldest members of the Harlan County Homemakers. She was active in the Parent-Teacher Association and civic affairs.

Services will be conducted Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Loyall Funeral Home with Bob Hull officiating. Burial will be in Ash Hill Cemetery, Mt. Vernon (note - this is incorrect, should be Elmwood Cemetery).

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be James T. Morgan, James O. Morgan, Bob Platt, Ray Sergent, Edwin Lawson, Everett Jones, Elbert Castle, Marion Schraeder and Jarvis Howard. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ladies Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 3 until 9 p.m. in the chapel of Loyall Funeral Home.

Mrs. Emma Hopkins, 77, of Loyall, Kentucky and formerly of Mt. Vernon passed away suddenly Thursday, January 19, 1978 at the Miners Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Kentucky. She was born on October 24, 1900 in Rockcastle County, the daughter of the late John C. and Emma Jane Owens Taylor. She was a member of the Loyall Christian Church.

Survivors are: her husband, Elmer Hopkins of Loyall; three daughters; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Ruby Hopkins.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 22, 1978 at the Loyall Funeral Home Chapel, Loyall, Ky. Commital service was held at the Graveside in Elmwood Cemetery by Rev. Ernie Johnson. Local arrangements were by the Cox Funeral Home.

Miss Taylor is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Taylor of this city and was the Asst. Cashier of the Peoples Bank. She was one of Mount Vernon's most popular girls and was liked by everyone. Mr. Hopkins is the son of Mr. J. A. Hopkins of near Brodhead and is a fine young man. Mr. Hopkins is a conductor for the L & N with headquarters at Corbin, Ky where they will make their home.
