• 1900 United States Federal Census, Thomas Taylor household, Rockcastle County, Kentucky: Gene was living with his parents. He was listed as Richard U. Taylor, son, age 3, born Sep 1896, born in Kentucky. ²⁰⁵

• 1910 United States Federal Census, Elizabeth M. Taylor household, Rockcastle County, Kentucky: Gene was living with his mother. He was listed as Richard E. Taylor, son, age 13, born in Kentucky. ²⁷⁷

• Career Military Service: Gene served in the US Army. Exact details of his service aren't known but according to a note found in the papers of his mother, Mary Elizabeth Fletcher Taylor, he left Mount Vernon, Kentucky on Thursday, 11 Dec 1913 to join the Army.

Also found in her papers was a letter from Gene, written on 15 Dec 1916 from Panama. In this letter, Gene seemed to be very unhappy with the Army and advised his brother not to join. Apparently he later changed his mind as he retired after a career in the Army. ³²⁹
