Vernon Signal on 26 March 1920 in Mount Vernon, Rockcastle County, Kentucky. 964 Mr. Madison Crawford Owens better known as "Uncle Mat Owens", died at his home near Freedom on Monday, March 22. Mr. Owens was born 1836 being eighty three years old on the fourth of last January. He married Miss Celia Owens May 7, 1863. Six children were born to this union: Mrs. Gillis Craig of Lancaster; Mrs Mack Fount Craig, who lives near Willailla; Mrs. John C. Taylor, Mount Vernon, George Owens, David Owens and Wesley Owens, all of Rockcastle. He was the oldest member of the Freedom Baptist church where his funeral was preached on Tuesday by Rev. A. J. Pike. He was buried by Ashland Lodge 640 F & A M of Mount Vernon. He was the oldest member of this lodge, having been made a Mason in 1864 and having lived the fifty-six years of his Masonic life as an honored and loved member of the lodge in which he was made a Mason. As a Mason, as a citizen and as a Christian gentleman, he held a sacred place in many hearts.
